Welcome to SOOPstack!
Goodbye to our monthly newsletter format.
Welcome to 2025!
You’ll notice that our newsletter has a new look and feel this month as we have officially moved to Substack! Substack will allow us to create more content and support our authors in your platform-creation journey. One of the big changes that we have made here at SOOP is that we are doing more to support authors in building their platforms to create audiences that will be interested in their books. So whether you’re here to read, write or both, our new SOOPstack will be a new home for everything. Our monthly newsletter will feature book giveaways and content for both authors and readers. We’re excited for this new part out of our journey and we’ll hope you’ll come along with us.

This month, I’m thinking about snow. Here in the Northeast, we’re about to have a big storm and we’ll be digging out for quite some time. Meanwhile, being snowed in is great time to write. I always find Winter to be so contemplative. There is something magical about the quiet of the landscape and the barrenness of the trees that I find soothing.
I am finishing up my line edits for my next book and one of the things I’m most excited about is all the wonderful questions about my writing I get back from editors. I really enjoy clarifying my writing. This is point of great editing. I encourage all writers to find someone you trust to give your work that second pair of eyes. It is so vital to quality writing. Some of the greatest writers were completely dependent on editors. The familiar prose of Jane Austen was due, in no small part, to great editing. So this month, I encourage you to look for a great editor to help your work come alive!
For Readers
This month we are getting excited for the release of our next project here at SOOP: About Not Losing. We are also running special discounts on our collection of hot new releases! If you haven’t had a chance to read some of our best titles from last year, then please make sure to read our curated list below. There’s a little something for everybody in this collection. Right now it is priced right and also makes for some great gift giving (Valentine’s Day is coming up!).
Author of the Month: James Ogsbury, MD
Dr. James S. Ogsbury is a retired neurosurgeon who lives with his wife Kathy in Denver, Colorado. A graduate of the Cornell University Medical College, who completed his training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, his career in medicine spanned more than 50 years. Originally from New York, he had a brief career in pop music before pursuing medicine, and falling into neurosurgery by simply walking through the wrong door. In addition to private practice, he also was the Director of Surgery at the Lutheran Hospital in the Denver area. His career included the development of a computer-based spine treatment program called the Colorado Low Back Collaborative, and being a physician consultant for two major insurance companies. He still lives in Denver with his wife and enjoys classical music, as well as skiing and biking. “About Not Losing” is his debut memoir about a fractious high-stakes malpractice trial in which he was a defendant in 1989 and 1990.
Book of the Month: About Not Losing
In this groundbreaking memoir, a neurosurgeon chronicles the real-time events of his unique journey through a high-stakes malpractice trial with a gripping, behind-the-scenes look at the trial from the perspectives of the neurosurgeon, the lead defense attorney, and the trial psychologist. The case, involving a patient who suffered a severe brain injury during her hospitalization, was brought to court by the patient’s Native American husband and the renowned Native American attorney, Gerry Spence.
Beyond the courtroom drama, the book reveals the profound transformation and unexpected friendships developed among the three protagonists. It is a compelling exploration of personal growth and the bonds that form in the crucible of high-stakes battles, delving into themes of self-finding, rediscovery, and the evolving nature of relationships in the face of adversity.
Hot New Releases: Women Write Now
Something or Other Publishing is proud to announce the next entry in their renowned anthology series with "Women Write Now: Women in Trauma," a collection of personal stories of trauma and recovery from women worldwide.

Monthly Book Giveaway: 25 Servings of SOOP
We've described 25 Servings of SOOP as a "literary wine tasting of up-and-coming talent." This wine tasting has the sweet rosé of "Frank and Lily" by Sian Fullerton balanced by more intense flavors such as "The Storm in His Eyes" by Charmaine Kimbini and "The Unpainted Portrait" by M.D. Jerome. Heartwarming stories are juxtaposed with stories of absolute horror.
While all of the stories we've chosen to include are pretty enjoyable on the surface, many have special notes that we hope you'll pick up. Many of our authors did an admirable job of subtly addressing social issues. Many stories feature diverse characters and highlight the challenges faced by people who are, perhaps, a little different from us. We, of course, hope this book will entertain you, but it's our deepest wish that you will take away from at least one story the desire to understand, respect, love, and empathize with others better.
