I'm not a consumer. I do not look at ads to discover what I "need." I identify my need, then look at ads to see where I can find the best deal on that thing. As a result, I buy a lot less than most people I know, and I generate a lot less trash than other people I see around me. I also save and reuse, or buy used, instead of buying new. New and shiny doesn't mean better, it usually just means more waste. I ignore style - what a waste!!! I tried to teach my children, more by example than by words, and they are proud to share with me what they have found at thrift stores, etc., so I've had some success and I'm grateful.
