Clancy’s Last Party
A Conversation with David Lastinger
David Lastinger first found his voice through writing while navigating the challenges of college life. Through short stories and journal entries, he discovered that storytelling was not just an outlet—it was a way of understanding the world around him.
Now, years later, he continues to use his talent to craft smart, heartfelt, and often humorous stories that encourage readers to see life through a different lens.
David’s short story featured in Fantastic Worlds tackles the sensitive topic of terminal illness—but through an unconventional and thoughtful perspective. Blending humor, heart, and an open mind, his story invites readers to question the status quo and embrace the possibility that different choices may lead to surprising outcomes.
Conversation with David Lastinger
When did you first dive into writing?
I first dove into writing when I was in college. I wrote short stories and journals that helped me sort through growing pains.
What inspired your short story?
I wanted to explore a different and not wildly popular option for dealing with a terminal disease.
What’s the most challenging part of writing?
Sometimes the hardest part is facing a blank page with no inspiration. I have found that the spark can come from anywhere and anything.
How would you describe your ideal reader?
Age doesn’t matter for my ideal reader. They will be curious, open to new ideas, and love smart comedy and some romance.
What genres do you love to read?
Other than romantic comedies, I love a good spy thriller like the Tom Clancy series.
Any books you think deserve more recognition?
I would love to see the traditional publishing side embrace more of the Indie side of writing. Even the Traditional writers got their start somewhere.
Are you working on any new projects or events that you're excited about?
As you read this, I am working on a new short story compilation. Just like the first one, there will be some crazy stories that will make you smile or even blush.
What message or feeling do you hope your readers take from your story?
It is okay to look at a problem from a different perspective. It may not be the norm of how its handled, and it might even be better.
Any advice for aspiring authors?
It is never too late to write a book. My first one came at 50 years old as a mid life crisis project. Just write it, most people want to and never do. Tiger Woods did not become a pro with just one lesson.
